The Snowman

The children have all been enjoying the neighbors' inflatable snowman. They each have their own name for it. Everett just calls it the snowman. Lana calls it "Snow", Maddie calls it "Man", and Gwyn calls it "Matt".

It's too bad this blog is html based 'cuz I'd love to give you actual IPA (Inernational Phnetic Alphabet) symbols for the sounds these girls make, but the symbols aren't part of the html repertoire. Bummer...A month later, Lana still can't hear the non-stressed syllable "man", and continues to say "Snow". Maddie, who had locked on to the "man" part even though unstressed, now attempts the full word but gets tripped up on the consonant cluster at the beginning. She now says "So-man". Gwyn just thinks it's funny that we try to correct her, and refuses to say anything other than "Mat". With such wild differences in linguistic development I'm beginning to wonder if I should dread the potty-training phase coming up sometime this year...
